Hungry Man is a weekly People’s Bike column written by Tyler Bowa. Hungry Man features one location a week in China where you can purchase a satisfying, delicious, and filling meal on the cheap. For the hungry cyclist in us all !

Lately Hungry Man joints have been popping up across Shanghai like wild flowers.  For almost 2 years I’ve been getting my morning coffee from the same spot on Yongkang Lu, near Xiangyang Lu.

It’s a grandmother-run 2 person restaurant, and I love it. It looks like this :

111 Yongkang Lu

They serve up some of the tastiest chicken curry in the city, for just a few RMBs. On a typical day I’ll order the Chicken Curry Rice, with a fried egg on top, and a bottle of coke (one of those small little glass ones). Total cost ? 13.5 RMB.  Amazing, and it fits into the Hungry Man budget.

So, so, so good.

The potatoes in the curry have been slow roasted over night, so they are soft and taste like butter. There’s also fresh coffee available for 15 RMB a glass, and it cures the common hangover.

Go try it out now ! When the weather’s nice, just pull the table outside onto the sidewalk and enjoy the sunshine.

Hungry Man, over and out !

I miss Shanghai food so much. Sadness.

The most useful blog I’ve read in ages – keep up the good work. Shanghai needs someone to sift out the cheap goodness from the expensive crap that swamps the city.
